I thought this was a very valuable conversation from which I learnt much. In this context I like the differentiation between Expectation and Aspiration in terms of human growth and evolvement, one being of the mind and the other being of the heart. Also the idea of both Being and Becoming co existing perennially. Here is a little song I wrote which ponders on the Taoist idea of change. https://youtu.be/6Lr7tShtbz4
I don't think society is on a downhill trajectory.
What was excused was much bigger in the past, fueled by traditional naive ideals.
People were propagandized more exactly as they had their own smaller regions of knowledge access. Christians were fed different stuff than other groups. The South got a different spin on topics than the North... Etc
Orwell wrote 1984 based on his own experiences working for British intelligence.
We were in 1984 for a long time. Keep in mind that the media in 1984 was more like what we had with centralized TV and limited newspapers that mostly all said the same bullshit.
I laughed when I saw that Plato's nose had been lopped off, so the image shows a clay nose added back on. My Dad oft repeated, 'Your freedom stops at the end of my nose' so perhaps someone did not heed the saying and knocked the nose of his face. Luckily for me, I have a significant nose and so I maintain my freedom well. Best and thank you from Oregon

Today, it's different.
