Maybe rather than strands or threads, these people you describe are like or wield bramble barbs: those who obtain authority whip at the public injuring them in every way. After being in London last May for your well thought out presentation, I saw the response from those who believe that certain groups of people can do no wrong or are above suspicion - my own silence then was due to cowardice in not firmly believing what I felt & suspected to be true, now fully confirmed. That said, I sense that the demoralisation over the past 6 years which has been strongly felt here in England is receding somewhat, maybe returning in different ways but less strong. I feel that people are looking at roots, for both themselves & those strands of brambles - and the best way to deal with a bramble in the wrong place is to remove it by the root - now there is a true battle!
The conclusion of your piece today sounded hopeful & offers light which is necessary after the dark effects of all those links you describe. We need this kind of inspiration. The youth of England, Europe - the world need this hope. Genuine question: Is there a scale of likelihood that grades "posits" between "certainty" and "fallacy"? Things that are "probably true", "questionable", "guaranteed true, and here's the proof" and "guaranteed true but we're afraid we can't reveal to you why"?
The reason I ask is that discovery can be an arduous process when every step of the way confronts the thinking researcher with the questions "How can this be true?" and "What interest does the writer have in relating falsehoods to me?"
Scepticism can be a good form of discipline: it impels us to look before we leap. That said, it can also induce us to question consensus trance. But deciding one way or the other needs more than just scepticism.
I do think you have to discover these things directly, yourself, to be absolutely sure. When the same connections crop up everywhere you look, there can be no more doubt. I would encourage others to lift stones, follow threads and see for themselves.
